Understanding Earth's Environment (GEOL 204)- 3 cr.
This environmental science class explores the interconnectedness of the geosphere, biosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and atmosphere, and how humans interact with each of these systems. It fulfills the UWEC K1 and R3 Liberal Education requirements, and satisfies Wisconsin conservation requirement for teaching certification in science and social science.
Environmental Geology (GEOL 115)- 4 cr.
In this hands-on environmental geology lab course we delve deeply into geologic principles related to rocks, water, air, soil, and life, that influence the environment and society. We will explore the Geology of western Wisconsin through local field trips and in-class activities. The course fulfills the UWEC K1 and R3 Liberal Education requirements.
Hydrogeology I (GEOL 315)- 4 cr.
This lab course will provide you with the fundamentals and real-world skills needed to work in the environmental field, to enroll in advanced groundwater courses (including GEOL 416), and to obtain advanced degrees in related disciplines. The course will primarily focus on the physical properties of groundwater storage, flow, and well hydraulics.
Hydrogeology II (GEOL 416)- 4 cr.
This course will primarily focus on contaminant transportation mechanisms in groundwater, including diffusion, advection-dispersion, sorption, and biodegradation. You will be provided with the fundamentals and real-world skills needed to work in the environmental field, to enroll in advanced groundwater courses, and to obtain advanced degrees in related disciplines. This course emphases developing technical writing skills and provides an introduction to environmental site assessment and common remediation practices.
Freshwater Science Field Studies in Western Wisconsin (GEOL 491)- 2 cr.
This is an interdisciplinary course taught by instructors with freshwater expertise in geology, biology, soils, and environmental science from UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout, UW-River Falls, and UW-Oshkosh. This immersive course will train you in common field and laboratory methods used in freshwater science investigations. This course is supported by the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin.
